had been pronounced dead

before the full weight of the obituary
had time to sink His shoulders
and cloud His gaze

I called Him up
on the telephone
and invited Him out
for breakfast

had I been aware of His situation
it is unlikely that I would have made the invitation

then again
all those pancakes
and butter
did appear
however slightly
to lift His spirits
